Why We Do It

To Share Our Deep Love for Africa with fellow Americans

Plunge Africa is a full-service Tour Operator and with a focus on Africa. Plunge Africa was created to make Africa readily accessible to Americans. As a result, we mainly target the American Market, service the America tourist and have only one destination: Africa. We were inspired in part by the movie “Out of Africa” and its protagonist, Baroness Karen von Blixen-Finecke. The Baroness was a Danish author best known for her memoir “Out of Africa.” It was written under the pen name Isak Dinesen and was adapted into the Academy Award-winning motion picture “Out of Africa,” a movie directed by Sydney Pollack and featuring Harrison Ford and Meryl Streep.

Baroness Blixen lived a tumultuous life: her father hanged himself when she was only ten; she contracted syphilis from her philandering husband, which left her unable to have children; she lost the love of her life—Denys Finch Hatton—in a plane crash when he was just 44; her African farm (a coffee plantation) failed spectacularly, forcing her to return home to Denmark bankrupt. Through it all, she persevered and her memoirs of the seventeen years she spent in then British East Africa (now Kenya) became a best-selling book and multi-award-winning film.

It was memories of her experiences in Africa that mattered to Karen Blixen, the moments that “fixed” themselves in her mind.

In her words, “Still, we often talked on the farm of the Safaris that we had been on. Camping places fix themselves in your mind as if you had spent long periods of your life in them. You will remember a curve of your wagon track in the grass of the plain, like the features of a friend.” It is to share with Americans (and by extension the rest of the world) our deep love for Africa and safaris (journeys) that we started Plunge Africa.
